**It raises the question, yes. Most atheists are said to suffer that kind of existential pain, and to commit suicide more often than non atheists...
He said “I think the point is that whether Hell is thought to be something out of Dante's Inferno, or a state of being wherein one is separated from God, the suffering entailed in the place or the state is beyond all conception of the experience of pain: the metaphor is unimportant beside teh belief in the reality which it represents.”
**It “represents” a different level of reality, that’s all. A meta-physical level of reality.
“As I said earlier, I find it very odd that many Christians have no problem consenting to this suffering by giving their allegiance to the entity which we are told imposes it.”
“Consenting to this suffering?” This is nothing you may consent to. The rest of the sentence sounds military, “allegiance” to “entity” “we are told imposes suffering”. No: The “entity” does not impose suffering as does not impose evil. If you think in terms of “entity” you are talking, again, of a deus ex-machina conception. There are others. Evil and suffering are a part of the world and God does not remove them. Why? No answer. God is Silence, too. Therefore, most answers you will find by yourself, if you re careful, guided sometimes. If you give that other self a little credit. But metaphysics and the military make not good bedfellows, I’m afraid.
A Christian, as i understood, does not give allegiance to suffering, but the opposite. God is Love. Eros is Theos. (At least, according to my tradition).
